Construction & Infra

Construction and infrastructure play a crucial role in the transition to a sustainable and circular society. There are major challenges in the areas of housing construction, the transition to sustainable energy, and climate change is also a key issue.

The construction sector employs approximately 667,900 full-time equivalents and generates a production value of around €100 billion, which represents ten per cent of GDP. Around 247,000 companies are affiliated with the sector. Approximately half of these carry out specialised activities, mainly SMEs and self-employed professionals, such as finishing work.

THE CHALLENGES

Several industry challenges that reinforce one another

  • Land use in the Netherlands, combined with issues such as nitrogen emissions.
  • Reuse of raw materials, enabling circular construction.
  • Prefabricated construction and robotics on the construction site.
  • People and organisation.
  • Strengthening the safety culture and embedding safe behaviour in everyday practice.

The trends

Innovation in construction

Innovation is primarily visible in the continued development of prefabricated construction, where flexibility goes hand in hand with a more industrial approach. In addition, robotics have become a necessity in response to staff shortages. Examples include developments such as bricklaying robots and autonomous construction vehicles. As part of this innovation, digitalisation, including BIM and Digital Twins, is now firmly established. Improved use of data is leading to significant gains in quality and efficiency.

Circularity as the norm

One of the most important trends in the construction sector is the shift towards greater circularity. Efficient use of raw materials and the use of renewable resources are becoming the standard. This is also reflected in the rise of biobased construction, such as the use of timber, flax or recycled concrete. This development is partly driven by stricter MPG standards (Environmental Performance of Buildings).

The energy transition is essential

The construction sector also plays a key role in the energy transition, including the sustainability of housing (both new-build projects and the upgrading of existing buildings), electrification (moving away from gas), and addressing grid congestion. One of the key focus areas is greening the construction site, which is necessary in light of nitrogen emission challenges.
