THE CHALLENGES

Energy transition in the food industry

  • Energy transition and efficiency: the sector is energy-intensive, with many processes requiring large amounts of energy. Reducing energy consumption and making use of renewable energy are crucial.
  • Supply chain optimisation and AI: data-driven insights and AI help to forecast demand, optimise inventory management and reduce waste. Machine learning can monitor production processes and adjust them in real time to improve efficiency and quality.
  • Changing consumer trends: customers expect healthy, sustainable and transparent products. This requires continuous innovation, new product concepts and a short time-to-market.

The trends

Consumers want transparency

Consumers are becoming increasingly aware of what they eat and want to know where their food comes from and what impact it has on the planet. At the same time, globalisation has made supply chains more complex. For companies in the food sector, this means making strategic choices regarding suppliers, logistics and production locations. Organisations that respond successfully strengthen their brand value, meet sustainability objectives more effectively and at the same time reduce operational risks.

Sustainable packaging

As of February 2025, the EU has introduced the Packaging and Packaging Waste Regulation (PPWR), with stricter requirements for packaging. From 2030 onwards, packaging must be recyclable and design and material choices must meet circularity objectives. Companies must comply with registration, reporting and waste management requirements by August 2026 at the latest. The entire value chain must establish infrastructure for separate processing, including e-commerce packaging suitable for returns.
