Onyx Power

Our client Onyx Power is a European energy provider and expert in the safe and weather- independent supply of electricity. With a capacity of around 2,350 megawatts their power plants form a central pillar in the local energy supply of regions in Germany and The Netherlands. Headquartered in Berlin, the company employs around 450 people at its power plant sites in Bremen-Farge, Rotterdam, Wilhelmshaven and Zolling, as well as its office location in Düsseldorf. The organizational culture is characterized by agility, flat hierarchies, vitality as well as respectful and trustful cooperation. Founded in late 2019, Onyx Power has set herself the goal of providing sustainable energy solutions for the future. To this end, Onyx Power aims to convert all our existing coal-fired power plants to alternative and CO2-neutral fuels by 2030 at the latest, if possible, and to convert and expand her sites into modern diversified energy parks. 

Power Plant Rotterdam
Commissioned in 2015, the Power Plant Rotterdam (PPR), with about 100 fixed and 30 flex employees, is one of the cleanest and most efficient in the world, with a net capacity of 731 MW. Right from the planning phase, the plant was designed to allow co-firing with up to 50 percent biomass alongside hard coal.  In 2030, the entire operation of the power plant will be switched over to biomass energy production. Besides biomass Onyx Power will be launching a separate hydrogen plant at the same location in Rotterdam which should be operational in 2028.

The position
As CFO you will be responsible for the further growth, financial healthiness and development of the organization. This is done by:

• Structuring, optimizing and empowering your teams;
• Further alignment and collaboration with the Onyx Power organization in Germany and other PPR departments.

The CFO is part of the Dutch management team and together with the Plant Manager, who runs the operation, responsible for PPR. As CFO you have a statutory responsibility and you will be responsible for Finance, Human resources, Procurement and IT The CFO will lead a team of about 
8 colleagues and you report directly to the Group CFO of Onyx Power.

The profile

• You hold a Master degree in in Accounting & Control, Economics or International Business;
• You have a minimum of 15 years of experience in an international (e.g. German) financial environment with focus on Financial Controlling (Budgeting), Accounting and Treasury (Cash Pooling / Transfer pricing);
• You are an experienced financial leader with a minimum of 10 years of experience in managing, leading and developing a finance team. Experience in also managing, leading and developing disciplines in the field of IT, Procurement and HR is a big plus;
• Experience in the energy of commodity industry with trading/ hedging is also a big plus;
• You have (hands-on) experience with optimizing/ enhancing financial processes and systems in order to achieve operational excellence; 
• You have experience in determining and directing the implementation of strategic business and/ or operational plans, projects, programs and systems;
• You have the internal drive to look beyond your responsibilities in improving and striving the organization in further growth;
• You have a good knowledge of the financial international standards, compliance and risk management practices;
• You are very capable to operate within different levels in an international organization;
• Your style of leadership will be based on clarity and consistency, strong teamwork, ownership and a clear human touch in managing people with the capability to motivate, develop, facilitate and enthuse them;
• Personal skills: strong leader, entrepreneurial and enthusiastic go-getter, lead by example, strong conceptual skills but also hands-on, excellent communication and social skills;
• You have excellent verbal & written communication skills in Dutch and English;
• The position is based in Rotterdam (Maasvlakte) and requires regularly travelling (Düsseldorf-Berlin).
